Projects

Over the last few years ShowSource Technologies products have been used in a wide variety of applications including some of the world's most advanced museums and theaters.

Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater

Tennessee Aquarium

Located in downtown Chattanooga, the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater is the region's largest film screen. When the theater's management decided to update some of the system's aging components, the ShowSource™ Solo fit the bill perfectly.

The theater was looking for a system to play audio and video files for pre-show content and special events. Automation of the theater's sound, video and lighting systems also topped the list of needed upgrades.

The Solo provides the theater with the ability to play high-quality digital video content up to 2K resolution at 60 fps. The fact that the Solo provides a simple upgrade path to 3D playback was also an important consideration for the theater management.

The installed Solo includes 16-channels of Cobranet digital audio output, as well as the optional LTC timecode card, which enables the system to chase the IMAX projector for synchronized audio playback and show control.

The project also included the development of an easy-to-use graphical user interface, complete with wireless control of lights, sound levels, and transport controls via a touch-screen tablet PC. This wireless control capability has simplified systems operation for special events and now enables operators to control presentations from the audience area instead of from the upstairs projection booth.

Chicago Museum of Science & Industry

Chicago Museum of Science & IndustryChicago's Museum of Science and Industry, one of the largest science museums in the world, is home to more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity. With more than 175 million guests in 75 years of operation, the institution's credentials as a world-class museum are well established.

In 2009, the museum completed a technical renovation of the Omnimax Theater that included new sound and digital projection systems. The ShowSource™ Solo was chosen to provide playback and show control for these new cutting-edge systems.

The server that was installed includes 16-channels of Cobranet digital audio output, as well as the optional LTC timecode card, which enables the system to chase the IMAX projector for synchronized audio playback and show control.

A primary goal of the system upgrades was the addition of new presentation capabilities for special events and corporate rentals in the five-story dome theater. The system would need to offer powerful, flexible control of a wide range of technology including playback equipment, presentation computers, house lighting and the LED cove lighting system installed around the base of the dome.

To meet this need, a custom graphical user interface was developed that operates on a tablet PC. Using the tablet PC, operators can select lighting presets, adjust volume levels and control video playback devices at the touch of a button from anywhere in the theater. For corporate rentals, this capabilty is key.

Prior to the installation of the Solo, each show required an usher to operate a console in the rear of the theater to make adjustments to lighting presets, sound levels, etc. The server's integrated show control capability now enables projectionists to pre-program lighting presets and pre-show content and store them as playlists. These playlists can easily be recalled on a show-by-show basis, ensuring consistency of presentation regardless of which projectionist or usher is on-duty.
